Electronic animal identification systems at livestock auction markets: perceptions, costs, and benefits
Electronic animal identification systems are becoming more common in livestock auction markets because of increased numbers of cattle being electronically identified. Also, the National Animal Identification System (NAIS) has increased awareness and perhaps use of electronic identification. In this study, individual characteristics of livestock markets were analyzed to determine how they relate to a livestock market operator's views, concerns, and knowledge of the NAIS as well as adoption of RFID reading equipment.
Electronic Identification and National Animal Identification System Updates
Animal identification is a familiar concept for many beef cattle producers. Producers use identification to designate ownership and to comply with animal health programs; however, electronic identification technology, such as radio frequency identification, is still new to many producers. Therefore, the goal of this paper is to provide the basic information on electronic identification, to discuss the advantages and challenges of the technology, and to provide an update on the status of the National Animal Identification System (NAIS).

National Animal Identification System (NAIS)
Website from the USDA Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service devoted to protecting the health of U.S. livestock and poultry and the economic well-being of those industries, by being able to quickly and effectively trace an animal disease to its source. Participation in building this national disease response network is voluntary. NAIS consists of three voluntary components: premises registration, animal identification, and animal tracing. Each of these components continues to evolve to meet producer demands. The site provides information or links on each of the above components, current news, guidelines and regulations, plans and so on.
National Animal Identification System (NAIS) — A User Guide and Additional Information Resources, Version 2.0
The official NAIS User Guide incorporates public comments on the November 2006 Draft User Guide and contains the most up-to-date information on NAIS. The User Guide provides producers with the information they need to understand how NAIS works, how they can put it to use in their own operations and why participation would benefit them and their animals.
National Animal Identification System (NAIS): The Road Ahead
The National Animal Identification System (NAIS) has been a widely discussed concern of livestock owners and producers since it was first conceived. The movement of animals and their products has created a need to identify sources of disease outbreaks and to assure consumers of product quality and safety to reduce possible individual firm and industry losses. This issue is sometimes confused with COOL, Country of Origin Labeling, which is an economically motivated issue, and is focused on differences consumers might place on domestically produced beef. As a policy matter, NAIS is basic in concept but has many complex hurdles to its implementation.
Perceptions and attitudes of cow-calf producers toward emerging technologies and policy issues in the beef cattle industry
The proposed U.S. National Animal Identification System (US-NAIS) has generated many concerns among beef cattle producers. The goal of the NAIS is to utilize 48-hour traceback in the event of an animal disease outbreak. The traceback would identify all animals that have had contact with the diseased animal, while linking an animal to its premises of origin. In this study beef producer demonstrated understanding, acceptance and adaptability to implement the US-NAIS.
