Basic Beef Cattle Nutrition
This factsheet, from the Ontario Ministry of Agriculture, provides a basic overview of beef cattle nutrition
Beef Cattle Feed Requirements
This document discusses feed requirements and provides a table of the amount of feedstuffs needed for various livestock systems.
Beef Cow Nutrition Guide
From K-State Research and Extension, this downloadable publication gives the biological priority for nutrients of a beef cow. Shows how to meet the animal's needs, while maintaining a minimal cost.
Body Condition : the Beef Cow's Energy Gauge
Briefly describes how to judge a cow's body condition, the use of body condition scoring, the effects of body condition on calving and how to feed according to body condition. This tool can also be used to monitor the nutritional status of beef cows.
Body Condition, Nutrition and Reproduction of Beef Cows
This publication’s purpose is to outline a system for evaluating beef cow’s body reserves and to relate the evaluation to reproductive and nutritional management.
Drylot Backgrounding and Finishing Beef
Finishing beef in large commercial feedlots is very common. This budget represents a producer that buys calves and then backgrounds and finishes them and thus is more typical a farmer-feeder type of operation as opposed to a commercial feedlot. This budget uses projected 2010 input and output prices for illustrative purposes. Individual producers should use their own prices and costs, and adjust production factors to match their individual situations. The breakeven price is particularly sensitive to changes in feed and feeder prices.
Effect of Feeding Frequency on Ruminal Function and Animal Performance
This full text source is a bibliography of articles about feeding frequency along with a brief discussion of the positive effects on cattle of feeding more frequently.
Facts about Optaflexx™: Ractopamine for Cattle
This article, from Texas Cooperative Extension, discusses facts about Optaflexx, a feed additive for steers and market heifers.
Feed Sampling Procedure
A brief explainer of how take a sample of feed so that it can be analyzed.
Guidelines for Use of Distiller’s By-Products
A brief explanation of distiller's by-products with factors to think about before using them for feed. Written by Dr. Chris Reinhardt from the Beef Cattle Institute at Kansas State University.
Management Software Tools
These software tools, from The Beef Cattle Institute, are in a variety of formats and include calculators for cow/calf producers, feed lots, marketing, and nutrition.
Manipulation of grass supply to meet demand
Grazed grass is generally the cheapest form of feed available for beef and milk production in Ireland. Grass growth is variable during the year with a peak in May/June and a secondary peak in August. There is poor synchrony between grass supply and feed demand on beef and dairy farms. This project examined the possibility of reducing the grass growth peak in May/June and increasing grass supply later in the year by altering nitrogen application pattern and extending autumn rotation lengths.
Medicated Feed Additives for Beef Cattle and Calves
The purpose of this bulletin is to explain the regulations regarding the use of medicated feed additives and to provide a list of approved drugs and drug combinations, use levels, and indications for use of medicated feed additives for beef cattle and calves.
Myths about Sorghum Grain Feed as a Feedstuff
Discusses the benefits of using sorghum (milo) as feed for ruminants, swine, and poultry. This series of slides by Dr. Chris Reinhardt from the Beef Cattle Institute at Kansas State University highlights nutrition, processing, and compares sorghum to corn.
Nitrates in Livestock Feeding
This publication, from University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension, describes symptoms, causes, prevention and treatment of nitrate poisoning in livestock.
Questions and Answers on Beef Cattle Nutrition
This Kansas State University Cooperative Extension publication answers questions about roughages; crude protein and urea; concentrates and grain processing; vitamins, minerals and water; additives and implants; and commercial supplements.
Redefining Feedlot Efficiency
This slide presentation from Chris Reinhardt of the Beef Cattle Institute at Kansas State University discusses feedlot efficiency in times of rising prices for things like corn and oil and alternatives to current management practices.
Remote Winter Watering Systems for Beef Cattle
This document describes ways to provide water to the herd during the cold of a Manitoba winter
Utilization of Corn Co-Products in the Beef Industry
Corn milling co-products are expected to increase dramatically in supply. Forage fed situations will be covered with dried co-products as this will be the most common application for both energy and protein supplementation in many forage feeding situations.
Water Requirements and Safety for Cattle Following a Disaster
This document describes how to keep cattle hydrated following a disaster
